220 V, Brownouts and Your New Appliance: A Five-Point Checklist

Philippine mains is 220 volts, 60 hertz, and it is not always steady. Before a new appliance goes on the counter, five things are worth checking — most take a minute, and two of them are the difference between a ten-year appliance and a one-year one.

1. Is it actually a 220 V unit?

Look at the label on the base or the plug: it should say 220 V or a range such as 220–240 V, and 50/60 Hz. Anything sold by a local brand or a Philippine retailer will be. The risk is with “imported” listings, personal-shopper items and balikbayan gifts: appliances made for Japan (100 V) or the United States (120 V) will run hot and die quickly on Philippine mains, or fail immediately, and no warranty covers it.

A step-down transformer fixes this, but a 1,400 W heating appliance needs a transformer rated well above that, which costs more than the appliance. For anything with a heating element, buy the 220 V version and skip the transformer entirely.

2. Does the outlet and cord match the wattage?

An air fryer at 1,400 W draws about 6.4 amps at 220 V. A rice cooker at 700 W, around 3.2 amps. Individually these are fine on a standard outlet. The problems start with extension cords.

  • Cheap multi-socket extensions are often rated for 10 A total. An air fryer and an electric kettle on the same one is already over.
  • Do not daisy-chain extensions. Each joint is a point of heat.
  • Heating appliances — air fryer, kettle, rice cooker, induction plate — go straight into the wall where possible. If an extension is unavoidable, use one with a printed rating of 15 A or more and put nothing else on it.

3. Surge protector or AVR? They solve different problems

These get confused constantly, and appliance-store staff do not always help.

A surge protector clamps brief spikes — the kind that arrive with lightning or when power is restored after a brownout. It does nothing about a sagging or fluctuating supply. It is cheap, and worth having for anything with a circuit board: a digital air fryer, a smart rice cooker, anything with a screen.

An AVR (automatic voltage regulator) corrects the supply when it drifts — the dimming lights and slow fans of an overloaded evening grid. It is bulkier and costs more. Simple heating appliances tolerate voltage sag reasonably well; a rice cooker just cooks a little slower. Refrigerators and anything with a compressor or motor are what an AVR protects. For a basic mechanical air fryer or rice cooker, an AVR is usually money better spent on the appliance itself.

4. What happens when the power comes back?

This is the check nobody does, and it matters for anything you leave running.

  • Mechanical rice cookers — the ones with a lever — usually pick up where they left off: if the lever was down, it resumes cooking; if on warm, it warms. Rice left half-cooked through a long brownout, then restarted, is often ruined, but the appliance is fine.
  • Digital air fryers and digital cookers generally do not restart on their own; the controller resets to idle. This is a safety feature. It also means a cycle interrupted by a brownout has to be started again, and the food has been sitting in a warm box in the meantime.
  • The restoration surge is when boards fail. If brownouts are frequent where you live, either use a surge protector or get into the habit of unplugging the digital appliances when the power drops.

5. Read the warranty for the words “voltage” and “surge”

Most local-brand warranties exclude damage from “abnormal voltage” or “power surge.” In practice this means a board killed by a restoration spike is not covered, however new the unit is. That exclusion is the strongest argument for a surge protector on anything digital — the protector costs less than one out-of-warranty repair.
