A rice cooker is the one appliance in a Filipino kitchen that runs every single day, so its electricity cost is worth knowing precisely. The short version: cooking the rice is cheap. Leaving it on keep-warm all day is where the money goes, and on a bigger cooker it can quietly double the bill.
The formula
Watts ÷ 1,000 × hours per day × 30 = kilowatt-hours per month. Multiply that by your rate per kWh. Most Metro Manila households on Meralco land somewhere between ₱11 and ₱13 all-in; we use ₱12.50 below. Check the “total amount due ÷ total kWh” line on your own bill for your real figure.
The catch with a rice cooker is that it has two very different power draws: the cooking element, which is the number printed on the base, and the keep-warm element, which is a fraction of that but runs for hours.
A small cooker, cooked once a day
Take the 0.6-litre Panasonic from our condo rice cooker picks. It is rated at 310 W and cooks three cups in roughly twenty-five minutes.
- Cooking: 0.31 kW × 0.42 h ≈ 0.13 kWh per day
- Keep-warm for 4 hours at a typical 30–40 W: 0.035 kW × 4 h ≈ 0.14 kWh per day
- Total: about 0.27 kWh a day → 8 kWh a month → roughly ₱100 a month
Notice that the four hours of keep-warm already costs as much as the cooking itself.
A family cooker, left on all day
Now a 1.8-litre unit around 700 W, cooking once in the morning and left on keep-warm until dinner — twelve hours, which is how a lot of households actually run it.
- Cooking: 0.7 kW × 0.5 h ≈ 0.35 kWh per day
- Keep-warm for 12 hours at roughly 50 W: 0.05 kW × 12 h ≈ 0.60 kWh per day
- Total: about 0.95 kWh a day → 28.5 kWh a month → roughly ₱355 a month
Nearly two-thirds of that is keep-warm. Switching it off after the meal and reheating a portion in the microwave or a pan brings this household closer to ₱130. That is the single biggest saving available, and it costs nothing.
Does a “jar-type” cooker change the maths?
A little, in the right direction. Jar-type cookers have thicker insulation and a thermostat-controlled warmer, so they draw less to hold temperature than a basic cooker’s always-on warming plate. The difference is modest — tens of pesos a month, not hundreds — but it compounds with the better-tasting rice, which is why we rate the jar-type Tough Mama as the pick for anyone who eats late.
What does not matter much
- Buying a bigger cooker “to be safe.” A larger element draws more for the same cup of rice. Size it to what you cook, not what you might one day cook.
- Brand. A 300 W element is a 300 W element. Efficiency differences between brands at the same size are small; the keep-warm habit swamps them.
- Unplugging versus switching off. A rice cooker with a mechanical switch draws nothing when off. Unplugging is about brownout safety, not the bill — more on that in our brownout checklist.
Frequently asked questions
How much electricity does a rice cooker use per month in the Philippines?
A small 0.6-litre cooker used once a day with a few hours of keep-warm uses roughly 8 kWh a month, about ₱100 at Meralco rates. A 1.8-litre family cooker left on keep-warm all day can reach 28 kWh, around ₱350. Keep-warm time is the biggest variable.
Does keep-warm mode use a lot of electricity?
Individually, no — typically 30 to 50 watts. But it runs for hours, so over a day it often costs more than the cooking cycle itself. Twelve hours of keep-warm on a family cooker is around 0.6 kWh, roughly ₱7.50 a day or ₱225 a month.
Is it cheaper to cook rice on the stove?
On an LPG stove, the fuel cost per batch is in the same range as a rice cooker’s electricity, and neither is expensive. The rice cooker’s advantage is that it switches itself off; the saving comes from not leaving it on keep-warm afterward.
