The most common reason an online shoe order goes wrong is not the shoe. It is that the number on the label means something different at every brand. Here is how to buy the right size from a Shopee or Lazada listing without trying the shoe on first.

Why the number on the label tells you so little

Shoe sizes are not one standard. A size 8 can be sold as a US, UK, EU or local size, and the same number can be a different length from one brand to the next. Many listings on marketplaces also use sizes written for other countries, and sellers often copy a size chart from the manufacturer without checking it against the stock they actually received. The one measurement that does not change from brand to brand is the length of the inside of the shoe, in centimetres.

Step 1: measure your foot

  1. Do it in the evening. Feet swell a little over the day, and a shoe that fits in the morning can pinch by night.
  2. Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall.
  3. Mark the tip of your longest toe, then measure from the wall to the mark in centimetres.
  4. Repeat for the other foot. Most people have one slightly bigger foot, and you buy for the bigger one.

Step 2: compare it with the seller’s chart, in centimetres

Open the listing’s size chart and look for a column in centimetres, often labelled foot length or insole length. Match your measurement to that column, not to the US or EU number beside it. If the listing only shows the label sizes, message the seller and ask for the insole length in centimetres for the size you want. A seller who answers with a number is giving you something you can hold them to. Keep the chat.

A shortcut that works well: take a pair that already fits you, measure its insole in centimetres, and compare that with the chart.

Step 3: leave room, but not too much

Rules of thumb, not standards: running and training shoes usually want about a thumb’s width (roughly 1 cm) between your longest toe and the front. Closed formal and school shoes are less forgiving, so a smaller gap works. For sandals and slippers your heel should sit on the footbed and not hang over the back. If you are between two sizes, choose the bigger one for sneakers and the smaller one only if the shoe has laces or a strap to hold the foot in place.

TypeWhat to check before you buy
Sneakers and running shoesInsole length in cm; whether the listing says it runs small or large; room for socks.
School and formal shoesInsole length and width; closed toe leaves little room for error, so measure both feet.
Sandals and slippersFootbed length and whether the heel overhangs; strap adjustment if it has one.

Step 4: before you pay

  • Read who is selling. A brand’s own store, shown with Shopee’s Mall badge, is the lowest-risk seller for the right shoe. A reseller can sell the same model, but the stock, the sizing and the returns are theirs, not the brand’s. We wrote about that gap in why the same product costs so differently on one platform.
  • Check the size you actually selected. Marketplace listings list sizes as variations, and it is easy to tap the wrong one. Look at the order summary before you confirm.
  • Find the return terms and read them. The listing and your order page show what the platform allows for a wrong size, which can be different from a defect. We do not quote a window here because it changes and differs by seller, so read it yourself before you pay.
  • Film the unboxing. A short video of opening the parcel is the simplest evidence if something is wrong when it arrives.
  • Be suspicious of a price far below the brand’s own store. That gap is usually a different product, an old stock, or a copy.

Quick answers

What if I am between two sizes? Go up for sneakers and running shoes. For formal shoes, check the chart in centimetres for both sizes and pick the one with the better gap at your longer foot.

Is it better to buy from the brand’s own store? It is the lower-risk choice because the brand controls the stock and the size chart. It is not always the cheapest, and we say so when a reseller is cheaper.

Can I send it back if it does not fit? It depends on the seller and the platform’s rules at the time. Read the return terms on the listing before you pay; do not assume.
